León Provincial Council Backs the Bierzo Honey’s Bid for Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)

The provincial institution encourages local producers to work together to secure this important European distinction, following their recent achievement of the Marca de Garantía de Miel del Bierzo (Bierzo Honey Guarantee Mark).

The León Provincial Council has reaffirmed its support for the province’s honey producers in pursuing the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), a European-recognized quality label. This initiative is part of the provincial strategy to promote rural development and strengthen the presence of León’s products in national and international markets.

The president of the Provincial Council, Gerardo Álvarez Courel, and the vice president and Councillor for Infrastructure, Roberto Aller, met on Tuesday with representatives of the beekeeping sector – specifically, the producers who recently obtained the Marca de Garantía de Miel del Bierzo, a crucial step toward securing PGI status.

They outlined joint action plans during the meeting to advance toward this European distinction. “The goal is to unite efforts so that the province’s honey producers work in a coordinated manner and achieve this important quality label”, said Courel.

For this part, Roberto Aller thanked the sector for its commitment and encouraged other producers to join the initiative. “They have secured another distinction for the province, and now we must continue this effort, so León gains a new PGI. This will help strengthen the rural economy and solidify the province as a benchmark for quality, both in Spain and beyond our borders”.

The Provincial Council reiterated its “unwavering support” for the beekeeping sector, both through its grant programs and institutional collaboration under the ‘Productos de León’brand, promoted by the council itself.
