The Bierzo Honey Guarantee Mark joins Castilla y León’s Quality Products

The regional government will include Bierzo Honey among the ten new food quality certifications, bringing the total number of recognized seals in the region to 79.

The Bierzo Honey has officially been added to the list of products with the Castilla y León Guarantee Mark, as announced this Monday by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development, María González Corral, during the Gourmets Fair in Madrid. This recognition is part of an expansion of ten new quality certifications increasing the total number of seals in the region to 79, representing a 15% growth compared to the current count.

With this addition, Bierzo Honey now shares the category with other products protected by the Guarantee Mark, such as Zamorano Garlic (Ajo Zamorano) or Roast Segovia Suckling Pig (Cochinillo de Segovia). González Corral stated that this decision reflects the regional government’s commitment to boosting rural development through unique, locally sourced products.

The minister emphasized that Castilla y León has 42 Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGI), along with 22 Guarantee Marks and five additional certifications, collectively representing over 1,300 agri-food businesses and around 17,000 farms. “This makes us the second Autonomous Community with the most quality certifications in Spain”, González Corral noted.

During her speech, she also highlighted the collaborative efforts with local producers and associations to achieve these recognitions, which serve as a key tool for retaining population and revitalizing the rural economy. In the case of Bierzo, the Guarantee Mark of honey complements other ongoing initiatives, such as the European recognition of the PDO Bierzo Pear.
